Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe is undoubtedly the best place in Sri Lanka to see wild Asian Elephants throughout the year. There are about 500 elephants in the park and they often roam in herds. Golden Jackal, Asian Palm Civet, Toque Macaque, Tufted Grey Langur and Indian Hare are some of the mammals that can be spotted. Udawalawe is also a good birdwatching site. Endemics such as Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Red-faced Malkoha, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Brown-capped Babbler and Sri Lanka Junglefowl are among of the breeding resident birds. The reason for creating the national park was to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir.

You will be taken for an evening game drive. Yala National Park Yala combines a strict nature reserve with a national park. Divided into 5 blocks, the park has a protected area of nearly 130,000 hectares of land consisting of light forests, scrubs, grasslands, tanks and lagoons. Two blocks are currently open to the public. Situated in Sri Lanka’s south-east hugging the Indian Ocean, Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and was designated a national park in 1938. Ironically, the park was initially used as a hunting ground for the elite under British rule. Yala is home to 44 varieties of mammals and 215 bird species. Among its more famous residents are the world’s biggest concentration of leopards, majestic elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted dear, peacocks and crocodiles. The best time to visit Yala is throughout the year except September and October when the water levels of the park are quite low. After dinner, retire early to start fresh the next day.

Day 06 Hikkaduwa - Airport

Leave early to Beruwela to visit Brief Garden. Peek and breathe in the hedonistic life of self-declared and self-taught artist Bevis Bawa and enjoy his former fairy tale garden and mansion. The villa brims with art, artefacts and sculptures and the garden is absolutely divine. The road to the Brief Garden leads you through jungle-like forest. Two statues which are made by Bevis Bawa border the main gate. The gardens are exotic and beautifully landscaped- frangipani, iron gates, elaborate water features and the works!
