Day 02 Udawalawe

Wake up early to go on a full day safari at Udawalawe National Park, where you can expect to see lots of elephants and other wildlife. You will be picked up from your hotel and dropped at the park entrance. You will be boarding your safari jeep for the game drive from the entrance. The Safari ends at 6 pm when you will be taken back to your hotel.

Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe is undoubtedly the best place in Sri Lanka to see wild Asian Elephants throughout the year. There are about 500 elephants in the park and they often roam in herds. Golden Jackal, Asian Palm Civet, Toque Macaque, Tufted Grey Langur and Indian Hare are some of the mammals that can be spotted. Udawalawe is also a good birdwatching site. Endemics such as Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Red-faced Malkoha, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Brown-capped Babbler and Sri Lanka Junglefowl are among of the breeding resident birds. The reason for creating the national park was to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir.

Day 03 Tissamaharama

After seeing the wild, today is a day to take a break and explore the neighbourhood. Check out from your hotel and head to Tissamaharama to visit a dagoba that was originally built around 200 BC. This white dagoba has a circumference of 165m and stands 55.8m high. It is thought to have held a sacred tooth relic and forehead bone relic of the Buddha. Also visit the Tissa Wewa or the Tissa tank, the centrepiece of the town. Head to Yala and check into your hotel for your overnight stay.

Day 04 Yala

Wake up early and Get ready for a full day game drive at Yala National Park. You will be picked up from the hotel and taken to the park entrance.A picnic breakfast by the river is provided, followed by lunch. If you are keen, go ahead and take a dip in the river. You will be taken for an evening game drive. Yala National Park Yala combines a strict nature reserve with a national park. Divided into 5 blocks, the park has a protected area of nearly 130,000 hectares of land consisting of light forests, scrubs, grasslands, tanks and lagoons. Two blocks are currently open to the public. Situated in Sri Lanka’s south-east hugging the Indian Ocean, Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and was designated a national park in 1938. Ironically, the park was initially used as a hunting ground for the elite under British rule. Yala is home to 44 varieties of mammals and 215 bird species. Among its more famous residents are the world’s biggest concentration of leopards, majestic elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted dear, peacocks and crocodiles. The best time to visit Yala is throughout the year except September and October when the water levels of the park are quite low. After dinner, retire early to start fresh the next day.

Day 05 Hikkaduwa

Check out of your hotel and drive to Hikkaduwa. Check into your hotel and relax before you step out for some adventurous crab catching with the locals. You will be taught how to catch crabs. Not just that! Bring the crabs back and let your host cook them into a nice Sri Lankan curry. Relish it along with some bread before you say goodbye to them.

Day 06 Hikkaduwa - Airport

Leave early to Beruwela to visit Brief Garden. Peek and breathe in the hedonistic life of self-declared and self-taught artist Bevis Bawa and enjoy his former fairy tale garden and mansion. The villa brims with art, artefacts and sculptures and the garden is absolutely divine. The road to the Brief Garden leads you through jungle-like forest. Two statues which are made by Bevis Bawa border the main gate. The gardens are exotic and beautifully landscaped- frangipani, iron gates, elaborate water features and the works! This tour provides a fantastic insight into the life of Bevis and his artistic creation. Spend a couple of hours and take in the architecture and the landscape. Head to the airport.
