Day 01 Negombo
On arrival at Negombo International Airport, be greeted by your chauffeur who will drive you straight to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Have lunch first and then head to watch elephants taking a bath, baby elephants and adults being fed at fixed timings. After the visit, head to the hotel to check in and for your overnight stay.
Day 02 Colombo
This would be your day to explore Colombo. Wake up in the morning and head to Colombo to see the Gangaramaya temple and Beira Lake. You can rent duck paddle boats to go around the lake. After that, head to the Old Dutch Hospital for lunch. This is one of the oldest buildings in the Colombo Fort area, dating back to the Dutch colonial era (ca. 1681). Today it houses nice restaurants and cafes, and cool shops you must check out.
Spend the evening learning Sri Lankan history!
Go on a guided tour with your host who knows Colombo like no other. This tour is by foot where you can experience first-hand the borrowed words from the Portuguese to the amazing architecture the Dutch/English left behind, see the vision and love the Englishman had for this land - all while learning and experiencing what being "Sri Lankan" is all about. Tours lasting 3 - 4 hours are conducted in the evening-time allowing the body to battle the humidity levels and experience the wind-down time of island culture.
Day 03/04 Digana - Kandy
Leave in the morning after breakfast and head to Kandy. Check into your accommodation.
Go boating in a nearby lake in the morning. In the afternoon explore a village, go on a guided walk to explore the village to meet interesting local people and learn about their way of life. Visit the home of a jewellery maker who handcrafts delicate Kandyan jewellery and watch as he fashions individual pieces from sheets of copper and semi-precious stones. Join your host and assist in the preparation of the evening meal. On certain days a villager may come up to your hosts’ accommodation and prepare a special local treat, either ‘village style’ bread or perhaps a local sweet. They will be happy to let you assist and learn the art!
On Day 4, early risers can join the owners at 6.00 AM to feed the poultry and cows. This is a domestic farm and the cows are almost part of the family so breakfast is quite a celebration for all! Visit the home of the lady who runs the Incense making cottage industry for a ‘hands on’ experience of incense making. Return to your accommodation and enjoy a cup of tea, then head to a tea Museum.
Enjoy a cuppa at the tea museum. Located approximately four kilometres from the Kandy city, the museum is housed in a tea factory building which was abandoned for more than a decade. Built in 1925, the spacious four storied Hantane Tea Factory stands as a proud monument to the success story of Ceylon Tea. Locals know the place more as a tea factory.
Head to Kandy Lake in the evening and take a stroll. Visit the war cemetery if you have time. Retire early and get ready for your next day.
Day 05/06 Yala
After you spend two days in Kandy, head to Yala. This speciality lodging in a mini island is a quiet, serene place for you to get away! Take a refreshing river bath, explore the mini island or ride our paruwa raft. Go bird-watching; early morning is best to spot peacocks. Take a hand tractor ride to the nearby Suspension Bridge and continue trekking to an old tank in the deep Yala buffer zone offering spectacular views. Spend a night in a farmer's tree hut as they ward off elephants if you are adventurous. Have a BBQ night. Enjoy a truly rejuvenating holiday. There is so much to do here.
The next day, wake up and go to Yala for safari.
Day 07 Unawatuna
Leave your lodging at 8 AM and head to Unawatuna. Located 140 km south of Colombo along the Southern coastal belt of Sri Lanka, this is a beautiful beach.
Unawatuna beach is a picturesque semi-circular bay beach that stretches no more than one kilometre. Unawatuna is fringed by lush groves of coconut palm trees. Besides swimming, the Unawatuna beach is also famous for snorkelling and surfing.
Check in, have lunch at your hotel and then go on a 2 hour lagoon canoeing trip. Canoeing is the perfect way for you to appreciate the prolific wildlife including beautiful birds and breathtaking views of the surrounding mangrove forest as you paddle.
Take the evening off, walk by the beach and retire for the night at your hotel.
Day 08 Negombo
Wake up early next day and head to the Galle fort before going to the airport. Founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese, Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, before the arrival of the British. It is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. Stroll along the narrow streets and you will see clear and well maintained evidence of the Dutch influence.
