Why should you travel, today?

Travelling can do wonders to your soul, body and mind. How? You meet the most amazing people, eat the most amazing food, see the most amazing places and return home with some amazing stories. You can always complain about time, money, busy job and responsibilities. Set all that aside, buy a return ticket to a random destination, have an open mind and just go. Here are some reasons to travel, if you still need to be convinced.

The way you relate to the world

Whether you go to one city or travel around the world, what you experience outside your comfort zone will help you see that there is much more to life. You would be more thankful to have the opportunity to wake up to a beautiful sunrise, go kayaking, climb mountains, see the wild animals in the jungle and most of all you will realize that the world is full of beauty that you are capable of seeing in a lifetime.

The way you relate to people

Practically all stories begin with meeting someone new. When you meet new people, you learn new cultures. You develop friendships with strangers who are nothing like you but like to do similar things. It also helps you to improve your communication skill. You learn a little bit about them, their culture, the place they come from and you share your story too. In the end, these little stories enriches your life.

Makes you humble

The more you travel, the more you realise how little you know about the world. It makes you feel like a little fish out there in a big ocean. There is so much to see, learn and experience. When you travel, you realise that everything is not about you.  It gives you a brand new perspective of yourself and life in general.

Yet, empowers you

That’s the beauty about travel. You feel humble, yet empowered. You might get thrown into tough situations and you find a way out. You learn to adapt to fit. You learn to adjust to survive. You transform unknowingly to be a better human being. But in the end, you feel strong, capable and accomplished.

Educates you

As a student History was not my favourite subject. When I started travelling, history came alive. You develop a sense of appreciation when the stories in your history book during your 8th grade were no longer in the form of pictures and stories  – but for real – in front of your eyes. And for once the memory remains.

Makes you empathetic

You thank all those little things you take for granted when you travel. The wars, the famines, the draught has a whole new meaning when you see it for real than on television. It makes you want to reach out and do your bit. To play your part. To feel responsible.

You rediscover yourself

When I am in Sri Lanka, I take onto water sports. When I return home, I find ways to get closer to water. A personality shift happens when you travel, allowing you to find parts of you that was not discovered before. Travel helps you to know yourself a little more every time.

Helps you reassess life

Our thoughts, beliefs, culture are perception towards every single element of life is ingrained in our psyche. When you travel you have the time to reflect. It helps you see if the person you are is really the person you want to be. It either reassures or distorts your beliefs.
